Welcome to my Madness.

Where the strange is normal and the normal is strange.

Lauren or Ecaterina is a multimedium artist working out of her Rochester home. Mainly working in the mediums of watercolor paint and the Japanese art of Kanzashi. Her works are inspired by the visions and scenarios that pop up in her mind’s eye.

Paintings of Madness

Experimental Sanity

An abstract painting of a person sitting on a dark-colored couch, wearing red clothing with a large hat or head covering, in a room with a light-colored wall and a beige curtain in the foreground.

Serial Madness

Painting of a woman with flowing hair holding a globe in front of a cosmic background with planets and stars.

Kanzashi Hair Pins

What is Kanzashi?

Kanzashi is the Japanese art of turning fabric, traditionally silk and rice glue, into petals and then into flowers. Those flowers then are added together to make hair ornaments.

Sometimes the silk used for the ornaments are from old kimonos that can no longer be used as clothing to give the fabric a new life. This art form allows for fabric and clothing that would been thrown out to continue in a new form and pasted down to future generations.

Colorful fabric flower brooches with beads on a dark background.
Decorative headpiece made of pink and beige silk ribbons, fabric flowers, and gold wire loops, styled on a mannequin head with long, wavy ginger hair against a black background.

Why I do it?

I like it. It’s a fun challenge to try and create ornate flowers and headdresses. Whether making a realistic Hydrangeas for a bouquet for a dining room or a large theatrical headdress.
